Las Herrerias de Rio Madera is a 1600 acre working estate set in the Natural Park of the Sierras of Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas. Through a careful management programme, the estate ensures the protection of its wonderful natural environment, which is home to a great variety of indigenous wildlife.

There are two houses currently the estate. The original estate farmhouse, El Cortijo de Rio Madera, is 100 years old and has been completely restored in traditional style whilst incorporating environmentally-friendly technology. Original stone and timber features have been retained where possible. The farmhouse has solar power, under floor heating and wood from the estate serves as fuel for the large open fireplace and stoves.

The cortijo is currently being run as a self-catering rental business and is registered by the Andalusian Ministry of Tourism. It has been awarded the highest grade possible “Superior”.

The cortijo comprises some 500 m2 on two floors and has seven double/twin bedrooms and six bathrooms. Communal areas include two living rooms, a dining room, kitchen, larder and laundry room, a library, games room and TV room. One massive open fire and two wood burning stoves.

Outside is a large pergola-shaded terrace with unimpeded, incredible 360-degree views, solar-power-heated swimming pool (with electric cover), sunning area, large barbecue, children's play area, original working outdoor oven, and more.

The Casa de los Cazadores was constructed in 1980 and is one floor. An inviting house located in a quiet corner of the estate with a mature garden. This house has just been renovated and it comprises an extremely large living area, divided into several separate zones – dining, lounge, etc. Two large fireplaces and two wood burning stoves, supplemented by electric radiators.

There are three en-suite bedrooms, and one has a separate annex with two extra single beds. Under a porch is a terraced area and there is a very large fenced garden. This house is ideal for smaller groups wanting a comfortable house in a very quiet and beautiful spot.

Herrerias del Rio Madera is a private hunting estate where it is possible to shot wild boar, red deer, fallow deer and Spanish Ibex. The estate can make arrangements for hunting parties, mainly during the winter season - October to February.

A Tree House is available for guests to observe animals – mainly wild boar and deer – at dawn and dusk in their natural habitat. The tree-house has been located strategically at an important junction of established animal tracks.

The cortijo is set in a wide and beautiful valley within the estate with no noise or light pollution. Hot in summer yet extremes always tempered by the height and cool breezes.

The estate is located in the heart of the Sierra de Segura natural park in the Jaén mountain range. Jaén province is Spain's largest protected area and boasts four Natural Parks, a series of mountain ranges with peaks over 2,000 meters high, beautiful valleys, lakes and rivers.

Granada airport is a three hour scenic drive and the estate is equally accessible from the airports of Madrid, Valencia, Alicante and Seville. From the main Granada-Albacete National Road, which skirts the Natural Park to the west, from the exit for Puerta de Segura it is a 40 minute drive into the mountains where you will find the paradise estate.
