The A to Z Of Rural Andalucia
Andalucian Wines
 Andalucian wines
Spain is famous for its extremely fine sherries and brandy from JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA in the PROVINCE OF CADIZ. A very pleasant time can be spent sampling superb finos, olorosos and amontillados from world famous bodegas such as Domecq, Gonzalez Byass, Sandeman and John Harvey. Fino sherry, one of the worlds greatest white wines, is crisps, light and golden and is excellent as an accompaniment to fish.

Brandy, originally introduced by the Arabs, far outsells sherry in Spain, and is largely made by the sherry houses. The biggest seller is Soberano, but Veterano uses its powerful image of the black bull dominating the skyline to promote its brandy.

In the 19th century MALAGA was famous for its wine and you can visit a number of sherry bars in the old part of the city where you will find barrels stacked roof high and their names written in chalk. Sample a selection and your score is chalked on the wooden counter in front of you.

Spain produces many excellent wines with the regions of Rioja, Ribero del Duero and Navarro being some of the best. Dona Mencia in the PROVINCE OF CORDOBA is famous for the wine producing area of Montilla/Morales. Every village and town makes its own wine from the numerous vineyard in the area, but BEWARE, it is not for the faint hearted, it is very strong!

On the subject of alcohol, RUTE in the PROVINCE OF CORDOBA must not be overlooked. It is well known for Anis and liquors made by a craft industry technique in the numerous distilleries in the town, and a home made special using anis, cinnamon, coffee and sugar and known as RESOL is not to be missed.

And to end we must not forget 'TINTO DE VERANO', a long drink made from red wine, casera and ice, a popular Summer drink, and of course SANGRIA, a pefect accompaniment to a barbeque on a warm evening.
